Modern interpretation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew is complicated by the question of the roles men and women can and should play in society and in relationship to each other. The newly published Annotated Shakespeare edition from Yale University Press provides a thoughtful essay by Harold Bloom on the tug-ofwar between Renaissance and modern sensibilities concerning gender roles and marriage. The new edition's chief attractions, however, are the contributions of editor Burton Raffel, including help with vocabulary, pronunciation and versification, plus alternative readings of certain phrases and lines.
He also takes a look at the usually deleted opening scene with Christopher Sly, indicating why it should, in fact, be viewed as integral to the play's social commentary. If longevity is any sign of success, we must bow to Euripides, one of the great tragedians of ancient Greece. The author of more than 90 plays, his surviving 19 works are now available in translations by Carl R.
Euripides is the playwright who reshaped the formal structure of traditional tragedy by introducing strong women characters and smart slaves, and by satirizing heroes of Greek mythology. Places, Please gives you all of the words to place in the grid, just as Fill-Ins do, but there are no black squares to help guide you. As you place each word, those letters offer clues for placing other words. The wrinkle here is that some of the words above and below each row will share those letters, stretching the boxes and the letters themselves.

Of course, if you enjoy the deductive side of Fill-Ins — figuring out word placement in the grid — you should also consider trying traditional Logic Puzzles. As you work your way through the different clues in the Logic Puzzle, you exclude possibilities in the grid by putting an X in the box where those two options cross. Pretty impressive deduction there.
